Geering Up is hosting a day focused on integrating computational thinking activities into your classroom. We will focus on three kid-tested activities based on the Grade 6 and 7 Provincial Learning Outcomes. Leave with ideas, inspiration, and resources to further include computational thinking in your classroom.

In the morning we will explore the curriculum through some “unplugged” activities. After lunch and an activity fair, we will split into three groups. Teachers will learn visual programming and leave with a ready to run an activity for their class. The three options are:

Level 1: Hour of Code – This is for teachers who don’t yet know visual programming, and would like a beginner level introduction to it.

Level 2: Scratch – The next step for teachers who would like to lead a lesson in visual programming with their class. You will learn how to make a basic Scratch program.

Level 3: App Inventor – This is for teachers who have already run visual programming activities in their classroom, and are looking for more of a challenge than Scratch. Teachers will learn how to use visual programming, letting their students get creative with app making!

What are plugged and unplugged activities?

Plugged activities use technology, such as computers or robots. Unplugged activities do not use any technology. They reinforce computational thinking skills that students will use for technology, and in everyday life! This event will include both plugged and unplugged activities.
